Send a lab request for payment
When you need this
You are a nurse at a partner hospital, and a doctor wants lab tests for a patient. You fill in the lab request in the lab's system, in place of the paper form. You don't take the payment: you send the request for payment, and your reception or accounts takes the money and checks the patient in. Then you take the samples.
Steps
Send the request
- In the sidebar, click Lab requests, then New lab request.
- Under Patient, find the patient, or register them if they are new.
- Under Requesting doctor, choose the doctor who asked for the tests. If the doctor isn't on the list, click Add a doctor.
- Under Tests and charges, add the tests the doctor asked for.
- Under Clinical details, type what the doctor wrote: the patient's symptoms or the reason for the tests.
- Click Send for payment. The button shows Sending… while it saves. Send the patient to reception or accounts with their medical aid card, if they have one: they set who pays and take the money there.

Take the samples, once the patient is checked in
- In the sidebar, click Laboratory, then the Lab orders tab, and open the patient's order.
- Under Specimens, click Add Specimen. Choose the Specimen Type and Container Type, then click Save.
- On the specimen's row, open the three-dot menu and click Collect. Check Collected At, then click Collect. The specimen gets its barcode.
- On the same menu, click Print Barcode, and stick the label on the sample.

What you should see
- After step 6, the message Sent for payment, and you are back on Lab requests. The request reads Waiting for payment until someone who takes payments checks the patient in.
- After step 9, the specimen's status is Collected, and its barcode shows on the row.
If something goes wrong
- There is no Who pays, no prices and no Summary, and the only button is Send for payment: this is how it should be. Your role sends requests; reception or accounts sets who pays, takes the payment and checks the patient in.
- A medical aid patient: the request waits for the lab's claims team to get the medical aid's authorization and check the patient in. Take the samples after that.
- The order isn't under Lab orders yet: the patient hasn't been checked in. Ask reception or accounts to check them in first.
- There is no Print Barcode on the menu: the specimen isn't collected yet. Click Collect first.
- There is no Add Specimen button, or no Collect on the menu: your role can't collect samples. Ask the lab to add it to your role.
- "Add the tests the doctor asked for": a request can't be sent with nothing on it. Add the tests under Tests and charges.
- "Enter the clinical details: why the tests are needed": they are always needed when tests are ordered, and you can't send the request without them. Ask the doctor.
