End a consultation ​

When you need this ​

The patient's visit is over and you want to close it: they're checked out and nothing more is added to the visit. Or the visit won't go ahead at all and you want to cancel or delete it.

Steps ​

To end a visit:

  1. Open the patient's encounter.
  2. Sign the consultation note first if there is one (see Write the consultation note). Once it's signed, End consultation is the main button at the top right. Before that – with a draft, or no note yet – End consultation is the button beside Continue consultation (or Start consultation), and you can still end the visit from there. While the status is Waiting for doctor there's no End consultation: start the consultation first. (A visit only the nurse needed ends with Actions › End visit – see Record vitals.)
  3. Press End consultation. The app asks End the consultation?
  4. Press End consultation to confirm.

To cancel or delete a visit that hasn't started (status Not started, or Waiting or With the nurse before anything is recorded):

  1. Open the encounter and press Actions at the top right.
  2. Press Cancel encounter to keep it on record as cancelled, or Delete encounter to remove it.
  3. The app asks Cancel this encounter? or Delete this encounter? Press Yes.

What you should see ​

The status changes to Completed (or Cancelled). The header buttons go, Record vitals goes, and the cards say None recorded., Nothing prescribed. or None ordered. where nothing was added. A deleted encounter is gone from the Encounters list.

The finished visit is on the Completed tab of Encounters, and under Previous visits on the patient's next encounter.

If something goes wrong ​

  • "The note isn't signed yet. Ending checks the patient out and closes the encounter.": the note is still a draft. Its diagnoses, medications and lab tests won't reach the patient's record. Press Cancel, sign the note, then end the consultation.
  • There's no Cancel encounter or Delete encounter: they're only offered before the consultation starts. Once it has started, end it instead.
  • There's no End consultation button: your role can't end consultations, the visit is already closed, or it's Waiting for doctor or With the nurse – press Start consultation first.
