Enter a lab result

When you need this

A test on a lab order is done at the bench and you want to put its result in, check it, and authorise it so the doctor and the patient can see it. For a culture (urine, stool, sputum, swab or fluid MCS, a blood culture), this includes the organisms that grew and their antibiotic sensitivities.

To run Stool, Sputum, Swab or Fluid MCS, switch it on first: open Setup › Lab Configuration › Available Tests, switch on Enabled for the test, check the details and click Save.

Steps

  1. Open Laboratory and click the lab order.
  2. Under Ordered Tests, click Add Result on the test. To change a result you already saved, open the test's menu (the three dots) and click Edit Result.
  3. Fill in each row under Component Results. A row with a list (for example Clarity: Clear or Turbid) takes one of its answers; a row without one takes a value you type. Rows marked with a red * are required: the result can't be authorised until they are filled in. Leave empty any row that doesn't apply to this sample, such as Wet preparation on a skin or wound swab, or Parasites present when none were seen: an empty row isn't saved and doesn't print.
  4. For a culture, Organisms & sensitivity opens under the rows. Leave it empty when nothing grew. Otherwise, for each organism:
    1. Pick it under Organism. If it isn't on the list, type its name and click Add '…' to the list.
    2. Fill in Quantity and Comment if you need them. Put how much grew here (for example Heavy growth or > 10^5 CFU/mL), not under Growth: it prints beside the organism it describes.
    3. Click Add antibiotic and pick the antibiotic. You can search by any name it goes by: typing Augmentin finds Amoxicillin / Clavulanate. To add several at once, pick them under Add several... and click Add.
    4. Click S, I or R for each antibiotic, and fill in MIC if you measured it.
    5. To add another organism, click Add organism.
  5. Click Save & continue, add a comment if you want one, then click Save (or Skip).
  6. To release the result, open the test's menu, click View Result, then Authorize.

What you should see

The result is saved and the test moves on. Once authorised, the report shows the rows under their sections (for a urine MCS Macroscopy, Urinalysis, Microscopy, Culture results; for a swab Specimen, Microscopy, Wet preparation, Culture), then each organism with its antibiotics marked S, I or R, and what the letters mean underneath: S = Sensitive · R = Resistant · I = Sensitive if there is an increased exposure to the antimicrobial agent by adjusting the dosing.

To change which rows your lab requires, open Setup › Tests, open the test, click the row, then Customise, and switch Required on or off.

If something goes wrong

  • "Enter Bacteria before authorising: the lab requires it": a required row is empty. Edit the result, fill it in, and authorise again.
  • "Choose S, I or R for … on …": an antibiotic has no result yet. Click S, I or R, or remove the antibiotic with its ×.
  • "… is already on the antibiotic list as …": the name you typed is another name for an antibiotic already on the list. Pick that one instead.
  • No Organisms & sensitivity on a culture: click + Add organism isolated under the rows. If neither shows, your server hasn't been updated yet.
