Read a patient's lab results
When you need this
You work at a partner hospital and sent a patient to the lab. You want to know when their results are ready, read them and print the report, without waiting for the results to come back on paper.
Steps
- Open Lab requests. A request whose results are back shows Results ready next to its status. When only some of its tests are done, it shows Some results ready.
- Click the patient's name. The request opens with the same badge at the top.
- Under Lab order, click Open results. The lab order opens.
- Under Ordered Tests, open a test's menu (the three dots) and click View Result to read its result. On a phone, tap the eye button on the test's card.
- To print the report, click Report PDF at the top of the lab order. The report opens in a new tab. Print it from there.

What you should see
The lab order shows each test's result. The report has every result the lab has authorised. The lab checks each result before you can see it, so a result still being checked doesn't show.
A culture result, such as a urine MCS, also shows Organisms & sensitivity when the lab grew something: each organism's name, how much grew and the lab's comment, then a table of Antibiotic, Result and MIC. The result is written out as Sensitive (green), Intermediate (orange) or Resistant (red). On the report it prints as S, I or R, with what each letter means underneath.
If something goes wrong
- No badge on the request: the lab hasn't authorised any of its results yet. Check again later.
- Some results ready: only some of the tests are done. You can read those now. The badge changes to Results ready once the rest are done.
- No Open results or Open lab order under Lab order: your role can't open lab orders. Ask the lab to give your role access.
- No View Result or Report PDF: your role can't read results. Ask the lab to give your role access to your hospital's results.
