Set reference ranges
When you need this
You are setting up the lab, or your lab's ranges for a component differ from what you see. A result is flagged High, Low or Critical only against your lab's own ranges. Catalogue tests come with suggested ranges; check them, change any that don't match your lab's, and add ranges for tests you created.
Steps
See a component's ranges:
- Open Setup › Tests and click the test on My Tests.
- Under Components, the Reference range column shows each component's range, 2 ranges when it has more than one, or Not set.
- Click the component. Its page shows Reference Ranges: one row per range, with its Sex, Age and Range.
Add a range:
- On the component's page, click Add Range.
- Choose the Sex: Both, Female or Male.
- Set the ages it covers. From age and Up to (not including), each a number and days, months or years. Leave From age empty for from birth, and Up to empty for no limit. The line under them reads it back, for example 18 years and over. Age is taken on the day the specimen was collected.
- Type the Low and High of the range, in the unit shown.
- If you like, add Critical low and Critical high, a Note for your lab (not printed on reports), and Effective from / Effective to dates.
- Click Create.
Change or delete a range: click its row, change it and click Update, or click Delete and confirm with Yes, delete. A suggested range you change becomes your lab's own.
Newer suggested ranges: when the catalogue's suggested ranges change, Newer suggested ranges available shows above the ranges. Click Compare to see your ranges and the new ones side by side, then Use suggested ranges to take them. Ranges your lab wrote itself are kept, and results already saved keep the range they were flagged against. Restore suggested ranges… does the same for a component whose suggested ranges you replaced.
What you should see
- Range added or Range updated, and the range in the list.
- New results for that component are flagged against it: the most specific range that fits the patient's sex and age on the collection day.
If something goes wrong
- "No ranges yet. Results for this analyte will not be flagged.": add a range.
- The report shows "Not configured" as the reference range: the patient fits none of the ranges, for example a child when every range starts at 18 years. Add a range that covers them.
- "Pick days, months or years for each age you enter": choose a unit next to each age you typed.
- "Ages must be whole numbers: use months or days for part of a year": type 18 months, not 1.5 years.
- Another message when you save, for example about ranges that overlap: it says what to fix. Change the range and save again.
- "This analyte has no lab row yet, so its ranges can't be set": switch the test off on Available Tests, then on again.
